Pakistan: Peace with India to continue

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, May 15 (UPI) -- Internal political changes cannot affect the current peace process between India and Pakistan, Pakistan's prime minister said Saturday.

Talking to reporters in Islamabad, Prime Minister Zafarullah Khan Jamali said people in both the countries wanted the peace process, "which also is the need of the hour."

He noted that Indian leader Sonia Gandhi, who is expected to soon take the oath as India's next prime minister, also has supported the peace initiative.

Recent efforts for peace between South Asia's two nuclear rivals were initiated by India's outgoing prime minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, during an historic visit to Islamabad in January this year.

His defeat in the just-concluded parliamentary elections had caused fears that a new government in New Delhi may not be very keen to continue the peace process.

"This is peace between two people, not just two governments," Jamali said. "That's why it will continue."
