Another 13 hit by Japan's pension scandal

TOKYO, May 13 (UPI) -- Japan's pension fund scandal has broadened as another 13 politicians have admitted they failed to make compulsory payments to the national program.

Leader of the New Komeito party, Takenori Kanzaki, told a news conference Wednesday evening that he, two top executives and 10 legislators from his party had failed to make their required payments.

According to officials, Kanzaki failed to pay the premiums for six months after the national pension program became mandatory in April 1986, the Asahi Shimbun reported.

Kanzaki apologized for his oversight, but stopped short of saying he would resign his position. He had earlier criticized Democratic Party head Naoto Kan for making the same mistake.

Kan resigned on Monday, following the resignation of Cabinet secretary Yasuo Fukuda over the issue.
