Teen found after kidnapping by smugglers

SAN DIEGO, May 9 (UPI) -- A Guatemalan teenager was found Sunday, 24 hours after he was kidnapped because his aunt did not have enough money to pay the men who smuggled him into California.

California Highway Patrol officer Chris Young told the San Diego Union Tribune that David Flores, 17, was reunited with his aunt Sunday after one of the alleged kidnappers met an undercover officer pretending to be a friend of the family at a Jack In The Box restaurant in Long Beach.

Two other men were arrested at the location where the boy was found.

The aunt handed over $2,400 Saturday to three men who brought David from Guatemala, Sgt. Jerry Rodriguez of the Corona Police Department told the newspaper. But they told her she was $100 short, grabbed the boy out of her car and told her she would have to pay them an additional $1,000.

The aunt instead went to the authorities, who issued a statewide Amber Alert.
