SANA quoted the source as saying a group of militants opened random fire in the neighborhood.

"The security services in charge fought them and brought the situation under total control," the source said.

There were reports of clashes between security forces and gunmen armed with rocket-propelled grenade launchers. Syrian security killed three gunmen while a fourth died in a hospital, reports from Lebanon said.

There were no reports of civilian casualties.

Al-Arabiya television reported as many as 15 blasts in the city, though there was no official confirmation. The Arabic-language channel said there were blasts near the Iranian and Canadian embassies, adding no damage was reported. The channel also reported blasts near the British ambassador's home. No one was hurt.

Al-Jazeera reported that the abandoned U.N. building was on fire.
