Dutch prince gives up throne for love

DELFT, Netherlands, April 24 (UPI) -- Prince Johan Friso, third in line to the throne of the Netherlands, married his controversial fiancee Saturday.

The prince gave up his place in the royal succession when he wed Mabel Wisse Smit in civil and religious ceremonies. The couple were refused government permission to marry because of claims that Wisse Smit, head of a human rights organization, failed to disclose details of a past relationship with an alleged drug dealer.

About 1,400 people attended the wedding, including Prince Harald V of Norway and billionaire political activist George Soros.

Johan retains his title although his wife will remain a commoner. His older brother, Crown Prince Willem, is first in line to succeed their mother, Queen Beatrix, followed by Willem's daughter.
