Bangkok cleaning up after fire

BANGKOK, April 24 (UPI) -- Bangkok was cleaning up Saturday after a huge fire destroyed much of a Bangkok slum area displaced thousands of people, the Bangkok Post reported.

The Friday fire in Bangkok's Suan Phlu area razed 700 wooden slum houses, and badly damaged a block of flats inhabited by police officers and their families, leaving more than 6,000 people homeless.

Officials evacuated 300 detainees from a police jail fearing the fire might spread to the site.

There were no reports of injuries.

Police were also unable to confirm the cost of damage or the cause of the fire, the Post reported.
