Gay Republicans weigh Bush endorsement

PALM SPRINGS, Calif., April 17 (UPI) -- Log Cabin Republicans wrestled Saturday with the issue of same-sex marriage during their national convention in Palm Springs, Calif.

The Los Angeles times said many members of the United States' mainstream gay Republican organization are deciding whether they should endorse President George W. Bush or withhold their support to make a point.

Delegates planned to devote much of the day, Satureday, to Bush's Feb. 24 endorsement of a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. Many of the Log Cabin Republicans view that endorsement as a slap in the face, especially those who thought Bush's promise of "compassionate conservatism" would ensure them room under the GOP tent.

"What we have here today is a sign that there is a culture war going on between us and the radical right," said Patrick Guerriero, Log Cabin executive director. "And this convention sends a message back to Washington, D.C., and to Republican leaders: We're here to stay, we're gonna win this battle and we're on the right side of history."
