Annan, Blair agree on Iraq goals

UNITED NATIONS, April 15 (UPI) -- British Prime Minister Tony Blair and U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan agreed late Thursday the world was united in obtaining a democratic Iraq.

"The circumstances will require ... a new U.N. Security Council resolution that will allow us to plan this way forward to the political transition in Iraq," said Blair. "There is, of course, absolute agreement -- I think virtually across the international community -- about what we want to see in Iraq -- and that is a stable and prosperous and democratic Iraq."

Annan agreed, "We all need to pool our efforts ...because we cannot afford to fail in Iraq."

The two met at the residence of the British Ambassador to the United Nations Emyr Jones Perry, about a block from U.N. World Headquarters and overlooking New York's East River.

Blair had stopped over for the talks en route to Washington where he was to meet President George W. Bush at the White House Friday.
