London mayor's Saudi comments blasted

LONDON, April 8 (UPI) -- London Mayor Ken Livingstone's remarks that he'd like to see Saudi royals hanging from lampposts has angered British politicians.

Livingstone, London's left-wing mayor was recently readmitted into the ruling Labor Party, told the Guardian newspaper: "I just long for the day I wake up and find that the Saudi royal family are swinging from lampposts and they've got a proper government that represents the people of Saudi Arabia."

In the interview, he also criticized the U.S. policy in the Middle East and said Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon should be imprisoned.

The Labor Party refused to comment on his remarks, but his rivals in the Conservative Party criticized them Thursday.

Steve Norris, the Tory mayoral hopeful, called them a "dangerous rant."

Simon Hughes, a candidate for the Liberal Democrats, said they were "deeply unhelpful, offensive and inappropriate."
