Sharon seeks party referendum on pullback

TEL AVIV, Israel, March 30 (UPI) -- Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon reportedly has decided to present his "separation plan" to his Likud Party for a referendum.

Sharon was expected to announce his decision, Tuesday evening, at a Likud convention meeting in Tel Aviv, Ha'aretz reported.

The plan calls for a pullback from the Gaza Strip and several West Bank settlements. He will discuss it with President George Bush April 14 in the United States, hold the referendum, and then ask the cabinet and the Knesset to approve the withdrawal.

Likud hawks oppose the pullback, but the idea is popular among Israelis in general. A supportive referendum might affect some ministers and legislators' votes.
