PARIS, March 26 (UPI) -- French police have arrested three suspects linked to a mystery terror group, a local radio said Friday.
The three were reportedly arrested Thursday evening in the Paris region. Police say the suspects may not be part of a threatening group, called AZF, but rather have ties to it, RTL radio reported.
A French interior ministry spokesperson, contacted by UPI, would not comment on the reported arrests.
Unknown just three months ago, AZF has sent a series of letters to French authorities threatening to plant bombs on French rail tracks if the government didn't pay it some $5 million in ransom.
It later increased the demand to more than $6 million, in a letter sent to French President Jacques Chirac.
The arrests came a day after a French rail worker found a second bomb on a piece of track between Paris and Basel Switzerland. AZF directed French investigators to a first bomb last month.
Although officials have not said the second explosive device was AZF's doing, RTL reported it had similar characteristics as the first bomb.
