Iraq Islamist vows peaceful resistance

AMMAN, Jordan, March 15 (UPI) -- Iraqi Governing Council member and head of the Sunni Islamic Party Mohsen Abdel Hamid vowed to step up peaceful resistance against the U.S. occupation.

Speaking to journalists in Amman on his way back to Iraq from a visit to Egypt Monday, Abdel Hamid said his party "strongly opposes the U.S. occupation of Iraq, but has opted for peaceful resistance."

He said circumstances inside Iraq, as well as in the United States, Europe and the Arab world will force the U.S. administration to meet its commitments and pull out of the Arab country it invaded a year ago.

"It is not in the interest of the United States to stay in Iraq because this occupation is costing it $4 billion monthly," Abdel Hamid said.

He stressed Iraq's interim constitution endorsed by the 25-member Governing Council last week "constituted the minimum consensus between the Iraqi factions, but was a step forward towards stability and transfer of powers to Iraqis by next June 30."
