Vandals attack Islamic center in Texas

LUBBOCK, Texas, March 8 (UPI) -- The FBI and police are investigating weekend vandalism and theft at a Muslim facility in West Texas town.

The Islamic Center of the South Plains was hit late Saturday or early Sunday, the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reported Monday.

Mohamed El-Moctar, the imam, said he found pro-American and anti-Muslim slogans written on walls, along with extensive damage and theft when he opened the building Sunday.

"What hurt us more was not the material loss, it was the graffiti written on the wall inside the mosque," El-Moctar told the newspaper.

His office was vandalized, a brick was thrown through a window, and a fence around the property was knocked down. A sound system and a VCR were stolen along with donations.

The FBI told El-Moctar shoe prints indicated more than one person was involved.
