Palestinians strengthen security forces

GAZA, March 4 (UPI) -- The Palestinian Authority Thursday moved to unify its security services in a bid to halt repeated assaults on journalists in the Gaza Strip.

Rashid Abu Shbak, the head of preventative security in Gaza, said the realignment would result in two operational units -- the general intelligence service and the preventative security service -- which would work together as a single unit.

"The PA has decided to adopt firm measures against all who attempt to destabilize security inside the Palestinian territories, and we will not tolerate any breaking of the rules or regulations," Abu Shbak said.

He also called on all Palestinian political movements to support and assist the PA in this task, especially concerning what he described as the "chaos of weapons."

The PA security move came two days after gunmen shot and killed in Gaza Khalil al-Zaban, a senior Palestinian journalist and adviser to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

The syndicate of Palestinian journalists retorted by slamming Palestinian security agencies and urging them to restore the "rule of the law."
