Costa Rican pres. asks U.N. help in Haiti

UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan hosted Costa Rican President Abel Pacheco de la Espriella Friday to discuss the crisis in Haiti.

"Every day that goes by is another bloodbath," Pacheco later told reporters, expressing hope a multinational force under the United Nations would be dispatched to Haiti as soon as possible.

Although he seeks intervention, Pacheco said he agreed with the Security Council's decision Thursday to seek a political agreement before intervening in the violence-torn Caribbean nation.

While the president said he was confident that Haiti President Jean-Bertrand Aristide would realize that "something has to be done" in response to the violence, said in so many words he should resign.

"If I had been Aristide, I would have left," said Pacheco. "I would not make any recommendations."

On another topic, the president, a medical doctor, told reporters Costa Rica is taking the lead in pushing for the early adoption of an international treaty banning human cloning. He said such a prohibition, far from being a radically religious position, is an "elementary humanistic approach."
