Mother Teresa's successor waylaid

NEW DELHI, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Several armed men waylaid a car carrying Sister Nirmala, Mother Teresa's successor, and robbed a priest who was driving the vehicle.

Police said Sister Nirmala, the superior-general of the Mother Teresa's Missionaries of Charity order, and several priests and nuns escaped injury, Superintendent of Police M.S. Bhatia said.

Armed with sharp daggers, iron rods, the masked men blocked the road Sunday with a fallen tree and robbed at least 40 other vehicles, including two passenger buses, in a span of two hours in Latehar district in Jharkhand state.

Father Anthony Xavier, who was driving Sister Nirmala in a jeep, had to part with all the cash he was carrying.
