Poison in park kills dog, sickens kids

TORONTO, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Toronto police are investigating Wednesday an apparently deliberate spread of poisoning in a park that has killed one dog and made two children ill.

The downtown park was closed Monday and investigators are trying to determine what killed the dog, sickened 10 others and possibly left two young children with similar flu-like symptoms.

The Toronto Sun said police have been quick to downplay any link to the numerous dogs believed poisoned while playing in the off-leash area of the park. Of the hundreds of children who used the park's toboggan hill, police point out only two have complained of sickness and may have just had the flu.

An autopsy was to be completed Wednesday on T-Bone, the spaniel that died Monday morning after eating something in the park.

"The concept that someone poisoned him is mind-boggling," said Jeffrey Rubin, T-Bone's owner. He said the Sunday night walk lasted less than 10 minutes, but at one point the dog had his head in bushes and was eating something.
