TV slayer to be released year early

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., Jan. 28 (UPI) -- The Florida Parole Board Wednesday moved up the release date for Ronny Zamora, convicted of a 1977 murder which he blamed on television violence.

Ronny Zamora, 42, will be released in June 2004, WFXT in Jacksonville reported.

The parole board last year reduced Zamora's sentence for the murder, scheduling his release for June 2005. But Wednesday it moved it up by another year.

Zamora's Miami trial was the first ever televised, and for that reason attracted worldwide attention.

His attorney, Ellis Rubin, also used as his defense the contention that Zamora was intoxicated by all the violence he saw on television -- another attention getter.

Zamora was convicted and sentenced to life when he was 15 for entering the home of neighor Elinor Haggart, 83, to rob her and to take her life.
