Battered professor denies being attacked

In a written statement, the wheelchair-bound Stephen Hawking denied reports he had ever been attacked, The Sun reported Wednesday.

Police announced this week they had opened an investigation into why beginning in 2000, the 62-year-old man made repeated visits to a hospital emergency department with injuries such as a broken wrist, broken arms, facial gashes, black eyes and a split lip.

The author of the international bestseller, "A Brief History Of Time," and Lucasian professor of mathematics at Cambridge University is paralyzed as a result of motor neurone disease and can speak only through a computerized voice box.

In a written statement, he asked the media to stop reporting on him.

"I object strongly to my privacy being invaded," he said. "There is absolutely no substance to the reports. I'd ask the media to dispense with this non-story."
