Lieberman says he's the one Bush fears

NASHUA, N.H., Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Sen. Joe Lieberman said Monday he is the candidate President Bush fears most to go against next November in the U.S. presidential elections.

Lieberman, D-Conn., was citing a report in The Australian, a newspaper based in Sydney that in December reported Bush told Australian Prime Minister John Howard his most formidable foe next November would be Lieberman.

Lieberman said the Bush campaign would not be able to knock Lieberman on the war on terror, cutting taxes or values.

However, Lieberman is well back in the back in most polls of Democrats. Former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean is considered the national frontrunner with retired Gen. Wesley Clark, Sens. John Kerry and John Edwards and Rep. Dick Gephardt all generally ahead of Lieberman.

Lieberman, who is not taking part in Iowa caucuses, was in the midst of a seven-city, eight-stop tour of New Hampshire Monday trying to change that.

Speaking in Nashua, N.H., Lieberman said: "I can not only unite the Democratic Party, I can reach out and bring in independents and Republicans who have had enough of George W. Bush. And believe me, there are millions."
