Royals retaliate against newspaper

LONDON, Dec. 3 (UPI) -- Buckingham Palace has withdrawn the media credentials of the London newspaper that planted a fake servant in the palace last month.

The Daily Mirror royal reporter Jane Kerr can no longer enter the palace to cover such events as last week's awarding of the Order of the British Empire to soccer start David Beckham.

Routine press announcements, such as the naming of Prince Edward and the Countess of Wessex's baby daughter, also have not been going to the Mirror since the fake footman revelations were printed, the paper said.

Queen Elizabeth secured a temporary injunction against the Mirror last month after the paper printed extensive pictures over two days of Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle taken by undercover reporter Ryan Parry, who exposed lax royal security while working as a royal footman for two months.

Kerr said she called Penny Russell-Smith, the queen's press secretary, to ask her if the Beckham ban was a result of the Mirror's footman scoop.

"I think that would be the logical assumption, yes," Russell-Smith replied.
