Saudi al-Qaida operative surrenders

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, Nov. 22 (UPI) -- An operative of the al-Qaida network turned himself over to the Saudi authorities after being promised a lighter sentence if he repents, a Saudi newspaper reported.

Abdullah bin Attiya al-Salmi said he turned himself in after listening to the press conference of Interior Minister Prince Nayef in which he urged wanted al-Qaida members to surrender for their own sake and benefit, the Daily al-Riyadh reported Saturday.

Al-Salmi said he was well treated by the authorities and wished he could have a chance to talk to his colleagues to convince them to follow suit.

He admitted being a member of al-Qaida and being involved in campaigns for inciting Saudi youth to join the Islamic holy war, or jihad, against the West and the pro-Western Saudi regime.
