Calif. man arraigned in child's fatal fall

TORRANCE, Calif., Nov. 18 (UPI) -- A California man Tuesday faced a murder charge for allegedly pushing his 4-year-old daughter off a seaside cliff three years ago.

Los Angeles County authorities charged Cameron Brown, 42, of Ventura, in the death of his child, Lauren Key, in November 2000. Lauren plunged 130 feet to her death while the pair was hiking on the scenic Palos Verde Penninsula.

Prosecutors alleged Brown plotted to kill the little girl to avoid having to pay child support. Brown had no relationship with Lauren until she was 3 and her mother filed for financial support.

The murder charge carries special circumstances of lying in wait and murder for financial gain. Both could qualify Brown for the death penalty if he is eventually convicted.

He was held without bail pending his arraignment in Torrance.
