Luther Vandross takes home two AMAs

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Luther Vandross, who has been struggling to recover from a debilitating stroke, won two American Music Awards in Los Angeles Sunday night.

The singer's awards for Favorite Male Rhythm & Blues Artist and Favorite R&B Album were accepted on his behalf by his mother, Mary.

Country veterans Alabama set a record taking its 23rd career AMA Saturday night when it was named Favorite Country Band, Duo or Group.

Other winners in the 31st annual awards show televised live from the Shrine Auditorium included Favorite Female Country Artist Faith Hill, Favorite Alternative Band linkin park and Favorite Contemporary Inspirational Artist Steven Curtis Chapman.

Justin Timberlake accepted his award for "Justified," named the favorite Pop/Rock Album, via video from Germany where he is on tour.

AMA nominations are based on sales figures and radio play, and winners selected by a survey of about 20,000 listeners.
