Mistaken for gangsters, partygoers die

RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov. 1 (UPI) -- A vanload of young partygoers were mistaken for rival gang members and attacked Saturday in the slums of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

At least six of the young people were killed and 12 others remained missing Sunday, the BBC reported.

The van driver told the government news service that he had set out from Macae to take his young passengers to a dance party in the Rio shantytown of Sao Carlos.

However, they got lost and ended up outside the Mineira slum, which is notorious for gang-related violence.

Three gunmen stopped the vehicle, believing the occupants were from a rival gang and forced them into the slum, where six were shot dead.

The gunmen then forced the driver of the van to take the bodies back to Macae, about 125 miles from Rio de Janeiro.

The fates of the other 12 were unknown, the BBC said.
