Mass. House rejects Sunday liquor sales

BOSTON, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- The Massachusetts House of Representatives Wednesday turned back legislation that would have lifted the state's ban on Sunday alcohol sales.

WCVB-TV said the state's so-called "Blue Law" is the last remaining holdover from colonial times. The rejected bill would have allowed statewide liquor sales every day of the year.

During a lengthy and sometimes heated debate, opponents said liquor sales were already expanded each year during the holiday season. But supporters of the bill said the current setup is unfair because only communities within 10 miles of New Hampshire and Vermont are allowed to permit Sunday liquor sales.

Supporters of the bill say they will try again before the legislative session ends.
