STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Sweden is reeling from the stabbing death of Foreign Minister Anna Lindh, who was attacked while shopping, CNN reported.

Lindh, 46, was stabbed several times in the chest, stomach and arms around 4 p.m. Wednesday at an upscale department store.

"I have received with sorrow, information that Sweden's Foreign Minister Anna Lindh died this morning at 5:29 a.m. of her wounds," Prime Minister Goeran Persson told a news conference.

She died after undergoing surgery for more than 10 hours at Karolinska Hospital, Persson said.

Her male attacker managed to escape.

Lindh, an outspoken campaigner for Sweden to join the euro in a referendum Sunday, was attacked just blocks from parliament.

Authorities said they did not think the stabbing was politically motivated. Persson said the euro referendum would proceed, despite Lindh's death.

Like most politicians and officials in Sweden, Lindh traveled without a bodyguard.

In 1986, Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme, was shot in the back as he walked with his son and his wife.
