Mechanical failure suspected in ride crash

ANAHEIM, Calif., Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Mechanical failure is suspected as the cause of the Thunder Mountain Railroad crash at Disney World that killed one rider and injured 10 others.

Investigators, however, said it would be weeks before they know for sure what caused the popular ride to separate and derail Friday, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.

A 22-year-old California man who was in the lead car died in the wreck. His cause of death had not been released by officials, the Times said.

After a young boy was injured on the Thunder Mountain ride in 1999, a California law was passed requiring inspections of permanent amusement park rides.

The acting director of the state's Division of Occupational Safety and Health said investigators will scrutinize the ride's design and its operating and maintenance procedures.

"We anticipate that it will take several weeks to get a handle on what happened," he said.
