Expert: Expect long guerilla war in Iraq

BAGHDAD, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- A long, hard guerilla war in Iraq is inevitable, a terrorism expert wrote in the London Mirror Wednesday.

Simon Reeve, author of the bestseller, "The New Jackals: Ramzi Yousef, Osama bin Laden" and the "Future of Terrorism" said Tuesday's bombing of the U.N. building in Baghdad "represents a new low in guerilla war."

"Despite the claims of President Bush, al-Qaida and its supporters were not operating on the ground in Iraq before the war. But they are now," Reeve wrote.

He said he believes "al-Qaida craves another confrontation with America -- the 'Great Satan' -- and what it views as its allies.

"Osama bin Laden always had contempt for Saddam. Ironically, removing him from power also took away the ideological barrier which prevented al-Qaida from working with the Iraqis," Reeve said.
