Japanese system set up to prevent outage

TOKYO, Aug. 16 (UPI) -- Japanese experts claim their electric power system is so set up to prevent an outage similar to the one that engulfed a big part of the United States and Canada.

The experts told The Yomiuri Shimbun that in Japan, there are only 10 electric power companies which supply the entire country.

Each company controls its own network and in the event of a problem each company can isolate the affected area from the rest of the network to prevent it from spreading.

In the United States there are more than 20 power generating companies in the areas hit by the power outage, with five Independent System Operator organizations monitoring glitches involving power accommodation and transmission among the companies.

However, since there are also nonmember companies that generate and transmit power on their own, the experts said power firms cannot immediately deal with blackouts on a united front.
