Taiwan: an 11th bid for U.N. membership

NEW YORK, Aug. 7 (UPI) -- Taiwan is making its 11th bid for U.N. membership with 15 of its diplomatic allies submitting a joint proposal for such an action.

Taiwan's vice minister of foreign affairs, Michael Kau, told reporters Wednesday it's his hope countries lacking diplomatic ties with Taiwan will also speak up for it.

The proposal calls Taiwan's exclusion from the United Nations a moral and legal challenge for the international community.

The Taipei Times reported the proposal also asks the United Nations to include a supplementary item entitled "Question of the Representation of the Republic of China (Taiwan) in the United Nations" on the agenda of its 58th session, scheduled to begin Sept. 16.

When asked why the country didn't use "Taiwan" in its bid, instead of "Republic of China (Taiwan)," Kau said the ROC remains the nation's formal designation and the word Taiwan in parentheses could help clarify the difference between the ROC and the People's Republic of China (PRC).
