Shooting victim sues city for $100 million

NEW YORK, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- The family of the woman shot by mistake during a police raid on an alleged stolen-goods shop in New York is suing the city for $100 million.

Viven Rodriguez, 30, was shot in the stomach Monday night when heavily armed police officers of an elite unit raided a suspected fencing operation known as The Spot, the New York Post reported.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the shooting appeared to be an accident and police had followed the proper procedures.

Rodriguez's aunt, Casilda Tejera, told The Post her niece went to The Spot to look for a cheap pair of pants. Rodriguez is in critical but stable condition.

Preliminary reports indicate Rodriguez ran into a bathroom when she heard police coming and that one officer may have mistaken her cell phone or pocketbook for a gun.

A spokeswoman for cable network HBO said a documentary crew filmed the entire raid.
