Liberian rebels told to cease fire

MONROVIA, Liberia, July 22 (UPI) -- Liberian rebels have been told to stop fighting government troops but it's not yet clear if they will obey.

Sky News said the order came from a rebel negotiator during peace talks in Ghana seeking an end to the civil war.

Kabineh Ja'neh, of the Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy, said: "We have given instructions to our forces to stop the fighting and have told them to exercise restraint even if there is need for retaliation."

Since Friday last week, LURD rebels have been involved in fierce fighting in Monrovia as part of a move to oust President Charles Taylor.

Sky News said Liberia's defense minister, Daniel Chea, reported as many as 700 civilians have been killed since the rebel onslaught started.
