N. Zealand mass murderer up for release

WELLINGTON, New Zealand, July 20 (UPI) -- An unprecedented outrage is sweeping New Zealand over parole for a man who killed seven people, a report said Sunday.

Victims' families and former police are banding together to wage an unprecedented fight against mass murderer Raymond Ratima's bid for freedom.

Ratima, New Zealand's worst surviving mass murderer, appears before the parole board Tuesday -- the same day families of murder victims converge on parliament -- just 11 years after he slaughtered seven people, including five children.

Ratima used a knife and a bat to kill his brother-in-law Phillip, Phillip's sister Nicola Ferguson, her partner Bevan Tapu and son Steven, 2. Nicola Ferguson was seven months pregnant. He also killed his own sons Piripi, 6, Barney, 4, and Stacey, 2, the Dominion Post reported.

Family members will speak directly to the board Tuesday via a telecommunications link-up to articulate their concerns.
