Peru still seeking Cabinet leaders

LIMA, June 25 (UPI) -- Peruvian president Alejandro Toledo Wednesday faced the daunting task of replacing his entire Cabinet, which resigned en masse Tuesday.

The resignations follow the decision by Peru's legislators to turn down a pay raise proposal for the South American nation's teachers, a move the ministers unanimously endorsed.

The need to make a change in his administration has become more and more evident as the embattled Toledo struggles for his political survival. In addition to having an approval rating of only about 10 percent, the Peruvian leader is also facing a general strike –- led by the teachers –- that is affecting may sectors of the nation's already failing economy.

Last month, the president called for a 30-day state of emergency that gave the Peruvian military some authority and has resulted in violent clashes with protesters.
