Gays throng to wed legally in Ontario

TORONTO, June 25 (UPI) -- Hundreds of gay couples are arriving in Toronto, where they can be legally married in time for Gay Pride week.

City officials predict many couples will want to tie the knot in the only North American jurisdiction where homosexual marriage has won full legal sanction, reports said.

Two weeks ago, an Ontario court ruled laws banning gay marriages violate Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The legal status of Ontario marriage licenses outside the province is muddy, but nonetheless, the city of Toronto's Clerk's Office is expanding their hours and working through the weekend to issue licenses.

More than 200 same-sex marriage licenses had been issued by Wednesday, the clerk's office said. Hundreds more are expected when tens of thousands arrive in Toronto for Gay Pride festivities on the weekend

Licenses can be obtained anywhere in Ontario, and border towns like Niagara Falls and Windsor expect increased applications.
