17 killed as train derails in India

NEW DELHI, June 23 (UPI) -- At least 17 people were killed when a speeding train derailed in western India.

Officials say the Mumbai-bound Holiday Express train was hit by boulders due to a major landslide near the railway tracks near Ratnagiri town in Maharashtra state on Sunday night.

Rescue workers worked through the night to pull out the survivors and retrieved 17 bodies. More than 40 people were injured in the accident.

Indian Railways is the world's largest employer with more than 1.5 million employees, and more than 1.3 million people ride Indian trains each day.
