Group asks PA death penalty moratorium

PHILADELPHIA, June 20 (UPI) -- The Christian Associates' Council of Bishops and Judicatory Executives is calling for a moratorium on the death penalty in Pennsylvania.

Responding to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court's report on Racial and Gender Bias in the Justice System, members of the group approved an "Appeal to the Governor and the Legislature of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Concerning the Imposition of the Death Penalty."

After allowing for those Council members not present to have an opportunity to sign the Appeal, the document was forwarded to Gov. Edward Rendell and members of the region's legislative delegation.

Executive Director Rev. Don Green said of the appeal, "When the Supreme Court of the Commonwealth in their own non-partisan research concludes that the death penalty has been unduly and unfairly applied because of racial and gender discrimination, a moratorium is essential."
