Suicide bomber's family knew nothing

HEBRON, West Bank, June 13 (UPI) -- The family of an 18-year-old who blew himself up on a Jerusalem bus had no idea of his plans, a report said Friday.

Unlike some families of Palestinian suicide bombers, who proclaim their children "martyrs," the family of Abdel Madi Shabneh's seemed more bewildered than anything else, the New York Times reported.

Tuesday, the night before the attack that killed 17 and injured more than 100, he studied for his high school English exam, his mother said. The next morning he said he was going to study more at school.

The next verified sighting of Shabneh came that evening when he lay dead in Jerusalem's Jaffa Road, disguised in the black pants and prayer shawl of an Orthodox Jew.

Since January, more than 10 young men from Hebron have carried out such attacks.
