Davis proposes half-cent sales tax hike

SACRAMENTO, May 14 (UPI) -- California Gov. Gray Davis Wednesday proposed a temporary sales-tax increase to help pay off a budget deficit that has grown to more than $38 billion. Davis said the May budget revision was the result of discussions with legislative leaders aimed at breaking the current deadlock in Sacramento.
