The U.S. Geological Survey said a number of minor aftershocks were likely over the next few days.

The San Jose Mercury News reported that the quake knocked out telephone service in parts of the city and caused items to fall off shelves in homes as far north as Oakland.

The shaking was felt by hockey fans in San Jose and baseball fans in San Francisco attending games and rippled through the suburbs of East Bay and as far north as Santa Rosa.

"Did you just feel the roof shake?" asked an ESPN television announcer as the San Jose Sharks and Colorado Avalanche continued their Stanley Cup playoff game uninterrupted.

The upper stands at the Compaq Center reportedly shook for nearly 10 seconds and the light fixtures on the ceiling continued to sway after the tremor stopped.
