MLB: St. Louis 3, Colorado 0

ST. LOUIS, April 3 (UPI) -- Brad Thompson hurled 6 2/3 shutout innings Thursday when the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Colorado Rockies 3-0.

Thompson (1-0) -- who earned a spot in the team's starting rotation after a solid spring and injuries to better-known starters Chris Carpenter and Joel Pineiro -- scattered six hits, walked two batters and struck out six.

Closer Jason Isringhausen, the last of three relievers, earned his first save in the new season.

Albert Pujols, Troy Glaus and Rick Ankiel all drove in a run, while Pujols, Glaus and Aaron Miles had two hits and the Cardinals took two of the season-opening three-game series.

Losing pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez (0-1) gave up three earned runs and seven hits in five innings with five walks and four strikeouts.

The Rockies got three hits from Garrett Atkins and two from Chris Iannetta.
