MONTREAL, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Top-seeded Roger Federer needed two tiebreaks to do it, but he advanced past the second round Tuesday at the Rogers Masters.
Federer ousted Ivo Karlovic 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-3), setting up a third-round match with Fabio Fognini -- a 6-2, 6-2 winner over 13th-seeded Andy Murray.
Rafael Nadal, the No. 2 seed, disposed of Marat Safin 7-6 (7-4), 6-0. Nadal will next meet Paul-Henri Mathieu, who defeated Mario Ancic 6-3, 6-2.
Andy Roddick, coming off a victory last week in Washington, also reached the third round by outlasting Arnaud Clement 6-1, 7-6 (7-5). Roddick, seeded fifth, will play Marcos Baghdatis in the third round after Baghdatis got past Robin Haase 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.
Other winners Wednesday included Tommy Robredo, Richard Gasquet, Mikhail Youzhny, David Ferrer and Frank Dancevic.
