Defending champ ousted at China Open

BEIJING, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- China's Shuai Peng, a wild-card entry into the tournament, defeated defending champion Maria Kirilenko in the second round of the $600,000 China Open.

Peng posted a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 victory to oust Kirilenko, the tournament's No. 8 seed, and earn a third-round match with Japan's Ai Sugiyama, who upset fourth-seeded Czech Nicola Viadisova, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.

Other winners Wednesday included second-seeded Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova, who took a second-round match from Jelena Kostanic after the Croat retired because of a right thigh strain.

In first-round matches played Wednesday, American Lindsay Davenport posted a 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 7-5 victory over unseeded Russian Anna Chakvetadze and France's Marion Bartoli stopped Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues, 6-3, 6-3.

The winner of the hard-court tournament, which will be decided Sunday, earns $95,500.
