Henin-Hardenne advances at U.S. Open

FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Second-seeded Justine Henin-Hardenne easily beat 28th-seeded Japanese Ai Sugiyama, 4-6, 6-1, 6-0, at the U.S. Open in Flushing Meadows, N.Y., Friday.

The 24-year-old Belgian will meet 21st-seeded Israeli Shahar Peer in the fourth round. Peer eliminated 14th-seeded Italian Francesca Schiavone, 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-3), Friday.

Sixth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova beat fellow Russian Anastassia Rodionova, 6-3, 6-0.

Fourth-seeded Russian Elena Dementieva had an easy match against her 33rd-seeded countrywoman Vera Zvonareva, 7-5, 6-3.

No. 19 Serbian Jelena Jankovic upset ninth-seeded Czech Nicole Vaidisova, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, and Aravane Rezai of France surprises 20th-seeded Russian Maria Kirilenko 6-3, 6-1.

Marion Bartoli of France, the 26th seed, was leading seventh-seeded Swiss Patty Schnyder, 6-0, 1-3, before rain suspended play for the night. The match is scheduled to resume Saturday afternoon.

Tenth-seeded American Lindsay Davenport and 22nd-seeded Slovenian Katarina Srebotnik also had their Friday match postponed due to rain.
