U.S. wins UBS Cup for the third time

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C., Nov. 21 (UPI) -- The United States got 7 1/2 points in Sunday's singles matches to win the UBS Cup with a 14-10 victory over the Rest of the World Team.

Fred Couples beat Colin Montgomerie 5 & 3 to give the U.S. 12 points. Since Tom Watson was 1-up with one to play against Sandy Lyle, and assured of at least a half point, the Americans were guaranteed the necessary 12 1/2 points to win the Cup.

U.S. Captain Arnold lost 6 & 5 to his counterpart Gary Player. The U.S. won the next three matches when Jay Haas defeated Barry Lane, 5 & 3, Craig Stadler bested Ian Woosnam, 5 & 4 and Tom Kite beat Rodger Davis, 1-up.

In a battle of the 2002 Ryder Cup captains, Sam Torrance from Scotland trounced Curtis Strange, 5 & 3. Peter Senior beat American Fred Funk, 1-up. Raymond Floyd halved his match with Mark McNulty.
