Singh leads field in Chrysler Championship

PALM HARBOR, Fla., Oct. 27 (UPI) -- Vijay Singh shoots for his ninth tour title of 2004 in this week's Chrysler Championship in Florida.

Singh, ranked No. 1 in the world since taking the top ranking from Tiger Woods in early September, finished second in the tournament last year, three strokes behind Retief Goosen.

A high finish will push Singh over the $10 million mark in winnings this season. He has won $9,825,166 so far.

Play begins Thursday on the par-71, 7295-yard Copperhead course at the Westin Innisbrook Resort.

The winner gets $900,000.

Goosen, ranked fifth in the world, is back to defend his championship.

Others in the world top 10 competing in the Chrysler event include No. 4 Phil Mickelson, No. 6 Davis Love III, seventh-ranked Mike Weir and ninth-ranked Stewart Cink.

The field also includes Stuart Appleby, Chad Campbell, Kenny Perry and the winners of three of the last four tour events, Fred Funk, Brent Geiberger and Ryan Palmer.
