Yankees drop Loaiza from starting rotation

TORONTO, Aug. 28 (UPI) -- New York Yankees pitcher Esteban Loaiza has been removed from the starting rotation, one day after not making it out of the fifth inning.

Loaiza, who is 0-2 with a 7.30 ERA since being traded to the Yankees, allowed four runs and seven hits while walking four over just 4 1/3 innings during Friday's 8-7 win.

Loaiza, 32, is 9-7 with a 5.23 ERA in 26 starts this season with both the Yankees and Chicago White Sox. He was traded from Chicago on July 31 in a deal that sent pitcher Jose Contreras and cash to the White Sox.

Last season, righthander Loaiza was 21-9 with a 2.90 ERA and finished second to Toronto's Roy Halladay in the American League Cy Young Award voting.

The Yankees, who had been using a six-man rotation, will now go with Kevin Brown, Mike Mussina, Orlando Hernandez, Javier Vazquez and Jon Lieber.
