Britain shares bomb plot intel with EU

ATHENS, Greece, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Britain informed the intelligence agencies of all European Union member countries of its massive Aug. 10 anti-terror operation.

Greece's Naftemporiki reported Aug. 12 that the British secret services informed Greece's National Intelligence Service that that they had arrested 22 people on suspicion of preparing liquid explosives for terrorist bombing attacks on planes departing from Britain's Heathrow airport for the United States. British authorities are strongly suspicious that al-Qaida was behind the aborted attacks.

The information was shared under the framework of anti-terrorist cooperation agreements between EU member states.

British intelligence services told their EU colleagues that they were unable to apprehend the main organizer of the plot and that they were investigating the possibility he fled the country, possibly to another EU state. British intelligence believes that the bombing mastermind may have been in charge of at least 50 people.

While Pakistan has arrested a number of suspects connected to the plot, the only EU arrests so far have taken place in Britain.
