PHILADELPHIA, July 26 (UPI) -- Legendary musician Paul Simon took the stage during the Democratic National Convention Monday for a surprise performance.

Simon performed his 1970 hit song "Bridge Over Troubled Water," one of the singer's biggest hits as part of Simon and Garfunkel.

"When you're weary, feeling small / When tears are in your eyes, I'll dry them all / I'm on your side, oh, when times get rough / And friends just can't be found / Like a bridge over troubled water / I will lay me down," he sang following guest speakers Sarah Silverman and Al Franken's speech that called for Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton supporters to band together.

In June, Simon mentioned that at 74-years-old he is considering retirement. "Showbiz doesn't hold any interest for me," he said. "None."

Simon is still on tour following his latest critically acclaimed album " Stranger to Stranger" and plans on touring in Europe this fall when he will be 75 before potentially hanging it up for good.

"You're coming towards the end," he said of wanting to retire soon after the European tour and travel with his wife, musician Edie Brickell. Simon also mentioned that a reunion with Garfunkel is "out of the question."

Singer Demo Lovato also performed during the Democratic National Convention where she called for greater access to mental health care.

Future guest speakers scheduled include actresses Chloe Grace Moretz, America Ferrera and Lena Dunham.
